TeleHub Communications Corporation, a provider of telecommunications
technology and services, was looking to develop the next generation of
telecommunications technology that would integrate the delivery of voice,
data and video over common fiber optic lines using a single control point
instead of multiple networks. In 1997, the company approached Waterstone
Consulting to turn this idea into reality.
Business Strategy
Before beginning development of the technology itself, Waterstone
Consulting utilized its expertise in the telecommunications industry to
quickly identify the project objectives that would ensure TeleHub could
translate its vision into a successful business venture:
Technology Strategy
At the core of this large scale development effort is the Virtual Access
Services Platform (VASP), developed by the TeleHub and Waterstone teams to
support the first Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) public network, a
network capable of delivering a full range of communications, voice, data
and video, across a single fiber optic line.
To ensure the new technology would operate effectively in the existing
public network environment, TeleHub and Waterstone Consulting worked
closely with telecommunications hardware vendors to design this complex
system. The Waterstone team helped prototype a custom interface linking
the ATM network with existing telecommunications switches through Signaling
System 7, the standard telecom switch-signaling protocol.
The new system is supported by a powerful Oracle database and
custom-developed user interfaces that provide TeleHub with the ability to
selectively allocate bandwidth for its customers, efficiently manage their
network and effectively track usage and customer information.
Project Approach
Waterstone Consulting worked closely with TeleHub and the company's
industry partners to fully understand the challenges of developing and
integrating this forward-thinking technology, and deliver a prototype
solution that would ensure fast and successful results.
Project Success
By developing a working model of the new system in only 6 weeks, Waterstone
Consulting enabled TeleHub to pre-sell its revolutionary service to
investors, converting a "good idea" into a successful business venture.
And with its entire VASP system now in place, TeleHub credits Waterstone
Consulting with helping to build a prototype technology for providing
innovative services within the rapidly changing telecom industry.
